“Mali was wonderful. The people, their interesting cultures, their beautiful architecture and their pervasive friendliness, seem surprisingly untouched by the 2Oth century and by western influences. We felt as if we were living in a very different and fascinating world. We recommend that anyone interested in a truly unique adventure should go to Mali as soon as possible, it seems too good to last!" The Ryan Family, Wisconsin
"With Turtle Tours you're in for a fantastic adventure that exceeds all your dreams, even if you think you've been everywhere and seen everything." Dr Larry Decker, AZ. Mali and Ethiopia
16 days: departures November-February 8-day itinerary
for two, departures all year
An overland journey showing you the essence of Mali as
it unfolds along the Niger River to legendary Timbuktu. You'll
discover its unique cultures, Dogon, Bambara, Sonrai, Bozos, Peuls,
Tuareg, and its history as your route takes you to Djenne,
dating back to the time of Timbuktu and still superb today with
its huge clay mosque and winding streets; three days in the mystical Dogon
Country with its reclusive cliff-dwelling culture dating its origins
back 700 years and still practicing its original animist religion; to Mopti,
“Venice of Africa", a bustling river port of impromptu markets,
a three-day Niger River cruise where you'll visit Bozo and
Peul villages and luxuriate in the gentle rhythm of your river-going
"pirogue". And finally, to fabled Timbuktu, the home of
the Tuareg, the original "Blue Men of the Sahara",
and where both the sands of time and the Sahara encroach more and more.
Your arrival there will mark another tribute to this once splendid crossroads
of culture.
