MONGOLIA: EXPEDITION TO THE NOMADS OF THE GOBI AND THE ALTAI

17 days: departure July including NAADAM festival

Imagine a country where wherever you turn the scenery is astonishingly beautiful and always different: immense, unending plains, windswept steppes suddenly broken by a stream, a rock outcrop, sand dune or a mountain range pushing up against a vast sky. Mountain passes that wind tightly through gorges lined with grazing yaks, sheep and goats or low rolling valleys where distant shapes magically turn into grazing two humped Bactrian camels or herds of horses. Imagine a landscape across which you can spy a rider perched high on his horse as he gallops across a green carpeted terrain, or the occasional isolated cluster of two to three tiny white dots, which as you approach, materialize into the traditional nomad homes or “gers” bright with ritual colors inside. And imagine the warmest possible welcome from the nomad inhabitants: Khalkhs, Uriankhais, Kazakhs, where even before you enter the stove is already being cranked up to serve you tea, and the traditional curds, cheese and sweets are already being laid out. And imagine your visits always being a mutual exchange of smiles, humor, culture, traditions and song. This is Mongolia.

“Mongolia was magnificent: so many moments to remember. The friendliness of all the nomad groups, so pleased and excited to receive us they invited in the entire neighborhood. Our stay with Chimiddorj the camel herder who entertained us with a camel ride and round-up and an extraordinary impromptu sing fest. Bat Orshick, the amazingly knowledgeable young monk. Following the horse race in our own vehicles during the Naadam festival. The singing: beautiful voices breaking out spontaneously into song; you didn’t need to know the words, you could just tell they were love songs to their horses and their nature. And the landscape: the beauty, diversity and colors, from sand dunes to mountains, icy glaciers at a distance and drives which even when long were never boring because very time you turned around it was a different view. And the entire staff was absolutely terrific.”

“Once again Irma has pioneered an outstanding encounter with charming, interactive people in a remote, beautiful land. Mongolia has scenery of breathtaking beauty, with land and sky that go on forever, snowcapped mountains, vast desert and sweeping tundra. The most memorable encounters, among many, were the ones with a highly intelligent and inquisitive young monk in the Gobi and group singing with the Kazakhs, where Kazakhs, Mongols and Americans took turns. (The Kazakhs won!)... a splendid country rich in history and the hospitality of the nomads.”
