The Kaokoveld, situated in northwest Namibia, is one of
Africa's most pristine wilderness areas. It is a land of spectacular mountain
scenery, the nomadic Himba and fascinating animals and plants adapted
to an arid environment.
The focus of this expedition is the nomadic HIMBA of the Kaokoveld, are one of Africa's least disturbed and most traditional tribes of nomadic cattle herders. They are a statuesque handsome people dressing only in skins, ochre-colored animal grease and ornate hairdos representing age sets. Their music and dancing expresses a vitality and passion that is hard to duplicate. These pastoral people live a nomadic lifestyle, constantly moving to areas suitable for grazing their livestock. It is through their intimate knowledge of their environment that they are able to survive the many hardships of life in the Kaokoveld. The Himba subsist largely on the milk of their goats and cattle. Several unexpected animals have also seen fit to make the Kaokoveld their home. Among these are the endangered desert elephant and the desert-adapted black rhino and giraffe. All occur in small numbers compared to more moist savanna regions. Also to be seen in the area are Hartmann's mountain zebra, lion, gemsbok, springbok and ostrich.
You'll also visit the BUSHMEN, an ancient nomadic people remarkable for their unique lifestyle and society. There are almost no traditional Bushmen left today living free in the Kalahari Desert as the governments of Botswana and Namibia have done their best to eradicate them. The Bushmen you will visit are sedentary, living protected within a complex which honors their ancient lifestyle and allows them to exhibit and demonstrate their traditional way of life. As the lessons to be learned here are both rare and vital, we have chosen to incorporate a visit to these last vestiges of a very special culture into our expedition.
