| Visit the spectacular summer festivals of the Wodaabe and the
Tuareg nomads. For the handsome Wodaabe, nomadic herders
of ancient origin, this is the moment of the "Gerewol",
a beauty contest in which the men compete with colorful makeup, flashing
smiles and elaborate costumes. For the 'Tuareg, this is the time
for 'tindes", camel dances and races. In honor of a plentiful rainy
season after long months of drought, these festivities form the annual
celebration, the Cure Salee, or "salt cure", in which
the health of the now exhausted herds is restored with copious amounts
of salt. This Sahelian region becomes alive with bustling nomad
camps and caravans as both the Wodaabe and the Tuareg regroup
after months of isolation for the festivities. Then, it's off to the Sahara,
to the Air Mountains of the Tuareg and to the Tenere Desert
a border of volcanic mountain "fortresses" fringed by sublime
Saharan landscapes. |
