When to visit the Daymaniyat Islands for turtles, clear water and whale sharks: a simple month-by-month guide.
Oman is a year-round snorkeling destination, but the experience changes with the seasons. Here's how to pick the right time to visit the Daymaniyat Islands, whether you're chasing crystal-clear water, turtles, or a glimpse of a whale shark.
November to April is the best all-round time to snorkel in Oman: calm seas, comfortable temperatures and visibility that often reaches 20-25 meters. It's also when overnight island camping runs. May to October is warmer and brings whale shark season, but the islands are protected for turtle nesting, so access is more restricted and all snorkeling is boat-based.
| Months | Conditions | Highlights |
|---|---|---|
| November to February | Coolest air, calm seas, peak visibility | Best snorkeling; overnight camping; book ahead |
| March to April | Warming up, still calm and clear | Excellent water, fewer crowds |
| May to August | Hot, warm water; nesting season; access restricted | Whale shark sightings; boat-based snorkeling |
| September to October | Still warm, calmer seas returning | Whale shark tail-end; shoulder-season quiet |
Green and hawksbill turtles live in the reserve all year, so any time you can snorkel the Daymaniyat, you have a strong chance of swimming with them. The nesting season (roughly May to October) is the reason the islands are protected in summer.
These gentle giants are seasonal visitors, most likely in the warmer months (July to October). Sightings are never guaranteed (they're wild), but the warm season offers the best odds. See our whale shark guide.
