Each summer the world's biggest fish glide into Omani waters off Muscat. Snorkel alongside gentle giants near the Daymaniyat Islands, departing Al Mouj Marina.
Between roughly July and October, whale sharks (the largest fish in the ocean) gather to feed in the warm, plankton-rich waters around the Daymaniyat Islands, just off Muscat. Al Mouj Marina is the natural launch point, and snorkeling beside one of these gentle giants is one of the most extraordinary wildlife encounters in the region.
Whale sharks pass through Omani waters in the warmer months, with the peak window for snorkeling near the Daymaniyat Islands generally falling in late summer.
| Period | Likelihood | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| July | Season begins | Sightings start as waters warm |
| August to early September | Peak | Best chance of an encounter; book ahead |
| Late September to October | Tailing off | Still possible, becoming less frequent |
| November to June | Unlikely | Out of season, but turtles snorkel year-round |
Whale sharks typically run six to ten meters long, yet they're entirely harmless: slow-moving filter feeders cruising near the surface to feed on plankton. You snorkel at the surface beside them (no diving needed), watching a creature the size of a bus glide calmly past. It's humbling, peaceful and utterly unforgettable.
These are protected, wild animals, and how we behave around them matters. On our trips we follow responsible-encounter practice:
